Protect Your Family Become a MEDIC member and protect yourself and your IRS dependents from paying blood processing fees at any U.S. hospital if a transfusion is needed.  It's easy to become a member, simply donate blood at any MEDIC location and you receive this special benefit for one year.  Each additional donation adds another year's credit towards the benefit.  For example, donate twice in 2011 and you and your family will be protected until 2013.  It's a great benefit for donors and their families.  Please note that this benefit does exclude pre-existing illnesses.
Jaxon Jaxon needed a boost upon his arrival into the world. Arriving a few weeks early, he had a little trouble producing his own red blood cells. However, a quick boost from MEDIC donors, Jaxon is now a happy, healthy boy. His entire family appreciates the donors who gave their son a second chance at life.
Kasey and Kristen Kasey's little sister, Kristen, received blood while battling a rare childhood cancer. Kristen battled Rabdomyosarcoma, a type of cancer that affects connective tissue, and won thanks to great medical treatment and blood donors! She had 20+ blood and platelet transfusions over the course of year. Most importantly, Kristen has been cancer free now for many years!

What Is Blood Used For?

  • Whole blood donations are divided into components. So, one donation can help up to 3 people.
  • Transfusions - primarily red cells - are given to replace blood lost during surgery, from trauma or from internal bleeding from conditions such as aneurysms or ulcers.
  • Blood components such as platelets are used to treat cancer patients debilitated by chemotherapy of their ability to replace their own blood cells.
  • Components such as frozen plasma are used to treat patients with clotting deficiencies.
  • So far, no substitute for any components of human blood has been licensed for use in the United States.
